Matt Renzi Trio
A San Francisco native, tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Matt Renzi was born into a musical family.
His father is principal flautist with the San Francisco Symphony and his grandfather was principal oboist with Toscanini’s NBC Symphony.
He received a BA in performance from Berklee College of Music and studied with George Garzone, John Handy, Joe Henderson and South Indian Vocalist R.A. Ramamani.
Matt has appeared at festivals and venues throughout North America as well as Europe, Japan, Israel, India, Singapore and Angola.
Of note is his work with “Dialogue,” a band led by legendary bassist, Herbie Lewis. He can be heard on a variety of recordings
including the award winning “Lines and Ballads” for Fresh Sound Records (Barcelona, Spain), and his latest recording, with this trio,
Matt has also performed and recorded with Marc Johnson, Michael Formanek, Tommy Campbell, Eberhard Weber, and Matt Garrison, and
has appeared twice previously at Chez Hanny with Eddie Marshall.
Bassist Dave Ambrosio, originally from the New York area, has lived and performed in New York City since 1988.
He has also toured extensively in the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan as a performer and clinician, including appearances at
the Montreal Jazz Festival, Schaffhausen Jazz Festival, JVC Jazz Festival, Vision Festival, Delaware Water Gap Festival and the Nancy Pulsations Festival.
David has played and recorded with many great jazz musicians including pianist Kenny Werner and the legendary vibraphone/clarinet duo Terry Gibbs and Buddy DeFranco,
as well as Ravi Coltrane, Mat Maneri, John Hicks, Vic Juris and George Garzone.
David has a Bachelor of Arts from Manhattan School of Music in Classical Composition and a Master of Arts in Jazz Performance from Queens College.
Drummer Russell Meissner, originally from Toronto, Canada, has been part of the New York music scene since 1995.
As a versatile freelance musician he has performed with both jazz and pop groups at New York venues such as The Knitting Factory, The Blue Note,
Zinno, Irving Plaza, The Supper Club and CB's gallery and The Mercury Lounge.
He recently toured Japan with saxophonist Matt Renzi and performed
at the North By North East festival in Toronto, Canada with singer/songwriter Django Haskins. He has toured across the United States with
Restless Records Recording artist Lori Carson playing in almost every major city. He has also toured Europe with Finnish jazz pianist Sunna Gunnlaugsdottir,
and performed and recorded with Sean Smith, Bill Charlap, Keith Ganz and John Ellis.
As an educator, he has been on the drum faculty at the National Guitar Workshop since 1996 and he is also an accompanist at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center.
