Jim Grantham Quartet





Jim Grantham plays tenor and soprano saxes and flute. He has performed with many fine musicians including Bobby McFerrin, George Cables, Eddie Moore, Mark Isham, Ed Kelly, Gaylord Birch, Frank Tusa, and Calvin Keys. He has recorded with Jessica Williams and Eddie Henderson.

He is also a well-known jazz educator, and has authored a popular, in-depth text on jazz improvisation.

Jim springs from the tradition of melodic lyricism: Lester Young, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter. The group features many original compositions as well as great jazz standards from composers such as John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, and Joe Henderson.

He appeared here previously with the Jim Grantham Quartet.



Pianist David Udolf moved to the Bay Area in 1991 after touring the world as a musical director for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. He toured for six years with San Francisco’s own legendary New Pickle Circus, and he has played with Terri Bryant of the Fifth Dimension, Mary Stallings, Herb Geller, Joe Piscopo, and Bo Diddley.

Bay Area artists he has worked with include Jules Broussard, Opie Bellas, Sherri Roberts, Kenny Washington, Jennifer Lee, Clairdee, Denise Perrier, Lavay Smith, Shanna Carlson, Cathi Walkup, Vicki Burns, Chuck Metcalf, Warren Gale, Graham Bruce, Noel Jewkes, Hal Stein, Pete Yellin, Donald Bailey, Jules Rowell, and Dmitri Matheny.

He appeared here previously with Chuck Metcalf, the Chuck Metcalf Tribute, Jules Rowell, Ratzo Harris, and Charlie McCarthy.

Bassist Richard Saunders studied composition, harmony and counterpoint with Bill Matthieu from 1968 to 1970. He currently is on the faculty of the San Francisco Community Music Center.

He has played with Country Joe and the Fish, Eddie Jefferson, Richie Cole, Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Cat Anderson, Pickle Family Circus, and the San Francisco Mime Troupe.

He has also recorded with Country Joe and the Fish, The Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle Band, and Jessica Williams.



Drummer David Rokeach toured with Ray Charles from 1990-91. He has performed/recorded with Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Aaron Neville, Mavis Staples, Lou Rawls, Dr. John, Joe Henderson, Mark Murphy, The George Brooks-Zakir Hussain Group, Wilson Pickett, Linda Tillery, Steve Miller, Joe Satriani, Joyce Cooling, Maria Muldaur, Calvin Keys, Barry Finnerty, Merl Saunders, David Grisman, Louis Bellson, Wayne Wallace, The Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Paula West, Marcos Silva, The Coasters, The Shirelles, Ernestine Anderson, Oscar Brown Jr., Ingrid Jensen, Maria Schneider, and Rita Moreno.

He played Chez Hanny previously with Klobas/Kesecker Ensemble, and Debbie Poryes.
