David Janeway was born in Rochester, New York. He began studying classical piano at the age of six after moving to Detroit in 1960.
Early influences included Harold McKinney, Marcus Belgrave, Bill Evans and Denny Zeitlin. After moving to New York City in 1978, Janeway studied with the late Albert Dailey for two years.
During this time he worked and recorded with Angel Canales and Orchestra Sabor, Art Farmer, The Supremes, Michal Urbaniak, Spanky Wilson, David "Fathead" Newman, Junior Cook,
Sonny Fortune, Billy Hart, Tom Harrell, Danny Gottlieb, Louis Smith, Dakota Staton, Pete Yellin, Valery Ponomarev, Benny Golson, Harvie S and others.
He has performed at Mezzrow, Smalls, Zinc Bar, Birdland, Jazz Forum, Zanzibar, Visiones, Sonny's, Village Gate, J's, Sweet Basil, Sweet Rhythm, Cleopatra's Needle and other NYC clubs.
Janeway performed at the NYC Salsa Festival at Madison Square Garden in 1980, the Detroit Jazz Festival, and other festivals and clubs throughout the US and Europe.
Janeway has recorded five trio albums, with sidemen including Harvie S, Steve Davis, Frank Tate, Chuck Zeuren,
Billy Hart, and Cameron Brown. Janeway recorded “Inside Out”, (Timeless Records, SJP 402/1993) as a leader and features Sonny Fortune, Billy Hart, Chip Jackson and Valery Ponomarev.
Janeway created the Hastings Jazz Collective in 2008. Made up of friends/veteran NYC jazz musicians, Tim Armacost, Jay Azzolina, Harvie S, and Ron Vincent.
Their CD, “Shadow Dances” released in 2019.
He created, directs and performs in “Hastings on Jazz”, a free summer jazz concert series held in Hastings on Hudson, NY each year.
Recent performances include “Salsa Meets Jazz” with Bobby Sanabria, and bands with Ray Blue, Tim Armacost, Harvie S, Eliot Zigmund, Marianne Solivan, Gary Smulyan,
Vincent Herring, Freddie Hendrix, Valery Ponomarev, and Peter Brainin.
As well Janeway is a member of the Eliot Zigmund Quartet, with Eliot Zigmund, drums, Rick Savage, trumpet and David Kingsnorth, bass.
This band continues to perform at major venues in the greater NYC region including appearances at Smalls Jazz Club in NYC, Deer Head Inn, Maureen’s Jazz Cellar in Nyack, NY and the Jazz Forum in Tarrytown, NY.
Janeway’s latest trio CD, Forward Motion (Steeplechase SCCD 31966) was released on 10/25/24 and features his trio with Billy Hart on drums and Cameron Brown, bass.
Peter Barshay
is a veteran bassist who has established a strong reputation over the
years from his sideman work on both the New York City and Bay Area jazz
scenes. Peter has performed with such jazz luminaries as Kenny Barron,
Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Stitt, Kenny Werner, Shirley Horn, Woody Shaw,
Pharoah Sanders, Blue Mitchell, Tony Williams, Joe Henderson, Joe
Lovano, Johnny Griffin, Bobby McFerrin, Joey Baron, Jimmy Rowles, Tommy
Flanagan, the Mingus Big Band,
Victor Lewis, Lou Donaldson, Lew Tabackin, Joe Chambers, Armen
Donelian, Jim McNeely, Sonny Fortune, Mike Stern, Art Lande, and Paul
McCandless.
Peter has played Chez Hanny previously with Harvey Wainapel, Steve
Lockwood, Michael
O'Neill, Dave Scott, Peggy Stern, Edward Simon, Joshua Breakstone,
Armen Donelian, Debbie Poryes, Shoebox Orchestra, Peter Barshay Trio, Jeff Buenz, Tim Armacost,
Karen & Norbert Stachel, Tidball5, Ron Vincent, and Larry Schneider.
Drummer Sylvia Cuenca, originally from San Jose,
now living in New York, has performed for 17 years with trumpet legend
Clark Terry
at venues such as the Village Vanguard and Blue Note in New
York City.
She toured internationally for 4 years with saxophonist Joe
Henderson, including trio settings with Henderson and bassists Charlie
Haden or George Mraz.
Ms. Cuenca has performed with such jazz
luminaries as Billy Taylor, Eddie Henderson, Gary Bartz, Kenny Barron,
Ray Drummond, Frank Foster, Red Holloway, Jimmy Heath, Al Grey, Frank
Wess, Michael Brecker, Houston Person, Etta Jones, Jon Faddis, Dave

She has appeared at Chez Hanny with Jared Gold and Ed Cherry, Jared
Gold and Brian Levy, Cuenca/Bollenback/Blades, the Peter Zak Trio, the
Roni Ben-Hur/Harvie S Trio, the Peter Horvath Trio, Harvey Wainapel, Charles McNeal,
