Ian Carey is a San Francisco Bay Area–based jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator.
His musical projects include the IAN CAREY QUINTET+1, which has been performing his original compositions for over a decade,
and has been featured on five albums including the 2020 release Fire in My Head;
WOOD METAL PLASTIC, a 7-piece group with strings which released its debut album Strange Arts in 2024;
TAKOYAKI 4, a street-food–style organ/horns quartet which performs original music and jazz rarities;
and DUOCRACY, a duo with pianist Ben Stolorow which explores rare American standards with intimacy and interplay.
Born in Binghamton, New York, and educated in Northern California and New York City (where he attended the New School and lived for seven years),
Ian has lived and worked in the Bay Area since 2001, performing with local bandleaders including Don Alberts, Lorin Benedict, Sam Bevan, Bryan Bowman,
Nathan Clevenger, Greg Johnson, Lewis Jordan, Mark Levine, James Mahone, Ron Marabuto, Fred Randolph, Anne Sajdera, Adam Shulman, and Suzanna Smith;
and in ensembles including the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, Anthony Brown's Asian-American Orchestra, the Circus Bella All-Star Band, the Morchestra,
the duo B. Experimental Band, and the Lost Trio; as well as appearing with visiting luminaries including John Daversa, Anton Schwartz, Alon Nechushtan, and Satoko Fujii.
He appeared here previously with Alon Nechushtan, and the Ian Carey Quintet + 1.
Kasey Knudsen is a San Francisco-based saxophonist, composer
& educator. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Composition
from Berklee College of Music in 2002.
In addition to leading a number of her own projects, as a co-leader,
she is involved in several groups including the Schimscheimer Family
Trio, the Holly Martins, and the Klaxon Mutant Allstars. Knudsen
collaborates frequently with many of the most unique musical voices in
the Bay Area including multiple performances across the US and Europe
with Tune-Yards, Fred Frith and the Gravity Band, the Charlie Hunter
Quartet, Erik Jekabson, the Ian Carey Quintet + 1, Ben Goldberg, the
Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, and Beth Schenck.
She appeared here previously with Ian Carey, Evan Francis, Erik
Jekabson, Darren Johnston, and Jarrett Cherner.
Saxophonist James Mahone went to California State University
Northridge to study classical and jazz saxophone under Bill Caulkins, and
participated in the university's award-winning wind ensembles and jazz big bands
under Ladd Macintosh, Joel Leach, and Gary Pratt.
James then became a fixture on the Los
Angeles music scene and was a member of Black
Note, who recorded for the Columbia and GRP/ Impulse record labels. He
has performed in many major jazz festivals (Montreal, North Sea, Pori, Umbria,
etc.)
James continued his musical studies at The New School, studying with Garry Dial,
Billy Harper, Benny Powell, and Charles Tolliver, and performing with
Tomas Fujiwara, Taylor Ho-Bynum,
Jaz Sawyer, Sasha Dobson, Danton Boller, and Arnie Lawrence.
Continuing his professional career in Tokyo, Japan allowed James more
opportunities to hone his skills as a performer, recording artist, and teacher.
James then relocated to the Bay
Area where he performs with Marcus Shelby,
Faye Carol, Mike Olmos, Erik Jekabson, Tiffany Austin, Akira Tana,
Glen Pearson, Josh Milgrom, Malachi Whitson, Grant Levin,
Giulio Xavier Cetto, David Ewell, Matt Clark, Eddie Mendenhall, Jaz Sawyer,
Mike Mitchell, Adam Gay, Hamir Atwal, Tim Angulo, and Leon Joyce.
Organist (and pianist) Adam Shulman has been a staple of the San Francisco
Jazz scene since he moved to the city in 2002. Before the move, Adam
was a student at UC Santa Cruz where he received a degree in classical
performance. While at UCSC he studied jazz piano with Smith Dobson.
Adam can be seen as a sideman with Bay Area musicians Marcus
Shelby, Anton Schwartz, Andrew Speight, Erik Jekabson, Ed Reed, Mike
Olmos, Gary Brown, Patrick Wolff, John Wiitala, Vince Lateano, Faye
Carol, Kellye Gray, Ian Carey, and Mike Zilber, and internationally
renowned artists
Stefon Harris, Willie Jones III, Dayna Stephens, Miguel Zenon, Mark
Murphy, Alan Harris, Luciana Souza, Paula West, Larry Coryell, Sean
Jones, Grant Stewart, John Clayton, Bobby Hutcherson, Bria Skonberg,
and the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
Adam appeared here previously with Eddie Marshall, Faye Carol and
Marcus Shelby, Dayna Stephens, Harvey Wainapel, Ian Carey, Patrick
Wolff, Ratzo Harris, Mark Lewis, and Adam Shulman.
Drummer Eric Garland
has been playing professionally since 1995, and teaching for over 16 years both privately and at schools.
Since 2004 he’s been on the faculty at Community Music Center in San Francisco, and now also teaches privately in Berkeley.
He studied at San Francisco State University with percussionist David Rosenthal (SF Opera), and privately with drum teachers
Pete Magadini, Scott Amendola, Dave Flores, Dave Elitch, and Dan Weiss.
He has performed and toured extensively in the US and abroad playing at many festivals including Montreal Jazz Festival,
Newport Jazz Festival and NYC Summer stage. He has played with a variety of different artists including vibraphonist Roy Ayers, Bobby McFerrin, and 60’s icon Donovan.
Locally in the Bay Area Eric plays regularly with these bands: Rob Reich Quintet, Jazz Mafia, Mads Tolling and the Madsmen,
Klaxon Mutant Allstars, Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, and Kasey Knudsen Quintet.
He was was heard previously at Chez Hanny with Mitch Marcus,
the Evan Francis Group featuring Darren Johnston, and Dred Scott.
