Steve Lockwood Trio


Los Angeles based pianist and composer Steve Lockwood studied with Dr. Edwin LaBounty and Dr. Herbert Herman at Memphis State University, and with Walter Cook at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He was strongly influenced by saxophonist and composer Gil Mélle, with whom he worked in the early 70's and by vocalist, theatre director and choreographer Meredith Monk, with whom he performed and recorded for more than 20 years.

He has composed extensively for theater, dance, film and concert stage. His jazz credits include work with Jim Pepper, Paul McCandless, Colin Wolcott, Harvie S(wartz), Sheila Jordan, Gerry Niewood, Albert Mangelsdorff, Günter Lenz, Christof Lauer, Vinny Golia, Wadada Leo Smith, Putter Smith, Alphonse Mouzon, George Lewis, Billy Mintz and Kim Richmond.

Steve has released two cds as a leader, "Equipoise" and "Rite of Passage".

This is his second appearance at Chez Hanny.

Carla Kaufman is a freelance bass player. She has played with many fine jazz musicians in the Bay Area, including Pete Yellin, Noel Jewkes, Vince Wallace, Jules Broussard, Clark Terry, Donald "Duck" Bailey, Larry Vuckovich, Tammy Hall, Calvin Keys, The Leo Trio, Black Olive Jazz, Cartoon Jazz big band, Vince Lateano, Pete Magadini, Eddie Marshall, Smiley Winters, Davis Ramey, Frankye Kelley, Ed Kelly, Denise Perrier, Bliss Rodriguez, David Udolf, Benny Watson, Yancie Taylor, and Randy Vincent.

She also has spent time playing gigs in New Orleans with Jerry Jumonville, Topsy Chapman, Ellen Smith, and The New Orleans Rhythm Jesters.

As a classical bassist she has played in the Berkeley Symphony, The California Symphony, The Women's Philharmonic and more.

She currently is a vocal accompanist at the Jazzschool Institute in Berkeley and teaches privately.

Drummer Greg Wyser-Pratte is a recent transplant to the Bay Area from Chicago. A graduated of Northwestern University, he has performed with Chicago notables Ira Sullivan, Von Freeman, John Campbell, Jodie Christian, Ron Perrillo, Bobby Broom, Dan Trudell, Judy Roberts, and Dennis Carroll.

As part of the Dan Cray Trio, he played The Idlewild Jazz Festival, The Chicago Jazz Festival, The Jazz Showcase, Pops for Champagne, The Morse Theater, and Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, and released four cds.
