Julian Waterfall Pollack's Infinite Playground


Julian Pollack's "Infinite Playground" appears at Chez Hanny playing all new music that is rooted in soul, jazz, and minimalism. The concert features a variety of Pollack's new compositions as well as soulful renditions of classic standards.

Pianist Julian Pollack has performed with Joshua Redman, Nicholas Payton, and George Garzone, and has appeared at the Lincoln Center, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, The Jazz Gallery, Montreux Jazz Festival and Yoshi’s. In 2007, he was a guest on Marian McPartland’s syndicated radio show, Piano Jazz and has released numerous recordings under his own name.

Julian appeared previously at Chez Hanny in duo with George Garzone.

Marcus Shelby bass.

Born in February 1966, Marcus Shelby has been playing the acoustic bass for 23 years. In this time, he has built a diverse and accomplished biography. Shelby was bandleader of Columbia Records and GRP Impulse! Recording Artists "Black/Note" and is currently the artistic director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra, The Marcus Shelby Septet and the Marcus Shelby Trio.

In addition, Shelby holds an instructor position at the Berkeley Young Musician Program, San Francisco State University and the Stanford Jazz Workshop, and is the 2006 Fellow in the Resident Dialogues Program of the Committee for Black Performing Arts at Stanford University.

As the 1991 winner of the Charles Mingus Scholarship, Shelby’s studies include work under the tutelage of composer James Newton and legendary bassist Charlie Haden. Recent honors include the City Flight Magazine 2005 award as one of the “Top Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area”.

Tim Bulkley drums.

One of the Bay Area's most in demand drummers, Tim can be seen with several different groups regularly, including Patrick Cress's Telepathy, the Anton Schwartz Quartet, Invisible Cities, and vocalist Michelle Amador.

He has worked with Mimi Fox, Mike Zilber, Bruce Forman, Taylor Eigsti, Smith Dobson, Ray Drummond, John Stowell, Michelle Hendricks, and Stanley Jordan.

He has appeared at the Monterey, San Francisco, Montreux, North Sea, Crest and Brisago Jazz Festivals.
