The Lost Trio
The Lost Trio was formed in 1994. Their first CD, "Remembrance of Songs Past", was released in 1995.
A second recording, "Live at Avalon & The Graves", with guest guitarist Adam Levy, was called
#1 Jazz Recording of 2000 by the San Jose Mercury News, and was listed on two other Top 10 Recordings lists, in the East Bay Express and the San Francisco Chronicle.
"Boxcar Samovar" (2004) continues to feature the trio's nearly-surreal repertoire, careening recklessly from Hank Williams,
Billy Strayhorn and Radiohead to the Grateful Dead, Thelonious Monk, and Carla Bley. The group's current live set also includes works by film composers Nino Rota,
Angelo Badalamente and Giovanni Fusco. Their latest recording, "Plays Solid Gold Hits!", ranges from Lennon and McCartney
and Bob Dylan to Black Sabbath, with interpretations that combine the elusively familiar and the utterly unpredictable.
This is their second performance at Chez Hanny.
Since 1982, saxophonist/composer Phillip Greenlief
has performed internationally as a sideman and as a leader in a variety of settings. In addition to club dates and tours across
North America and Europe, he has performed at the 1st Annual John Coltrane Festival in Los Angeles; North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Hague;
the Freiburg Zelt Muzik Festival in Germany; the Du Maurier Jazz Festival in Vancouver, B.C.; the Werkstatt fur Improvisierte Musik in Zurich;
the Ulrichsburg Festival and the Konfrontation Festival in Nickelsdorf, Austria; the Isole Che Parlano Festival in Sardinia and the
2003 Biennale Festival in Venice Italy; and the International Festival of Scenic Arts in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Greenlief has performed or recorded with Bruce Ackley, Steve Adams, Scott Amendola, Bonnie Barnett, Nels Cline,
Clubfoot Orchestra, Beth Custer, Robert Dick, Trevor Dunn, Dominic Duval, Lisle Ellis,
Fred Frith, Ben Goldberg, Vinny Golia, Albert Tootie Heath, Roberto Miranda, Meredith Monk, William Parker, Gino Robair, Waddada Leo Smith,
Pauline Oliveros, Adam Levy, and Bertram Turetsky, among many others.
He is also the founder of Evander Music, an independent record label.

Bassist Dan Seamans grew up in Washington, DC. While completing a music degree at
UC Santa Cruz he studied string bass with Larry Epstein, Mel Graves and Michael Willens and collaborated with pianist Graham Connah.
Moving to Oakland, he played with Bill Bell, Donald Bailey, Mark Levine and John Schott, and co-founded the New Klezmer Trio,
with Ben Goldberg and Kenny Wollesen, a group which went on to do several European tours, and record three CDs on John Zorn's Tzadik label.
During a period in Southern Vermont, he was mentored by master guitarist Attila Zoller.
Drummer Tom Hassett has been an active member of the Bay Area
jazz community, though unrecognized by some and
repudiated by a few, for over twenty years. Study with
master drummer Jerry Granelli in the '70s left him
largely unfit for most commercial work, and so he
remains today. He worked with the
Susan Chen Trio at Harris' restaurant from 1988 - 2000,
and appears on their cd "Harris Nights".
Tom was heard previously at Chez Hanny with Laura Klein and Rich Lesnik.
