Guitarist and composer Dave Haskell has had an
unusual career, with two stints as a professional musician bracketing
two decades as a commercial pilot.
He began as a blues-playing teenager mentored by Robben Ford, before
falling in with a succession of exceptional pianists based in the Bay
Area, including Larry Vuckovich, Smith Dobson, Larry Dunlap, and Mike
Nock, who featured the guitarist on a gig with his seminal fusion combo
"The Fourth Way" at the Great American Music Hall.
In the late 70's he worked for several years with tenor saxophonist and
jazz/rock fusion pioneer
Jim Pepper, in a band with bassist Ratzo Harris and pianist Russell
Ferrante (who went on to found the Yellowjackets). Other work followed
with Mark Soskin, Jeff Lorber, Merl Saunders, Randy Crawford, and the
LA based fusion band "Rush Hour", before Dave's career change to
professional pilot.
Retired from piloting, Dave is composing and playing seriously again,
leading his own group with top Bay Area musicians such as Matt Clark,
Adam Shulman, Dan Zemelman, Aaron Germain, Dan Feiszli, Phil Thompson,
Curt
Moore, Alan Hall, and his distinguished colleagues below.
He appeared previously at Chez Hanny with the Dave Haskell Group.
