Dave Bass Quartet



Dave Bass brings his Quartet to Chez Hanny to play originals and jazz classics in a wide spectrum of styles: be-bop, straight-ahead, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and tango.

Cincinnati born, now based in Sacramento, pianist, composer, and lyricist, Dave Bass, having studied piano in Boston with the legendary Madame Chaloff and composition with George Russell, then doing a world tour as Brenda Lee’s pianist, settled in the Bay Area in the ’70s, where he played with Bobby McFerrin, and led his own group which included Babatunde Lea and Jackie Ryan, playing at Keystone Korner, The Trident, and Bajones.

In the mid-80’s a wrist injury ended his musical career. With a family to support, Dave enrolled at the University of California, Irvine, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude before graduating from UCLA School of Law and enjoying a successful legal career. In 2015 Dave retired as a California Deputy Attorney General to devote himself to music again 24/7.

In 2010, Dave released his first CD, "GONE", featuring Mary Stallings and Ernie Watts. GONE hit #2 on the national JazzWeek Radio Charts. Dave released his second CD, "NYC SESSIONS" in 2015, featuring Phil Woods, Karrin Allyson, Harvie S, and Ignacio Berroa. NYC SESSIONS hit #5 on the national JazzWeek Radio charts and received a coveted 4 STAR review from DownBeat. Dave is now working on his third CD.

Jeff Sanford (flute, clarinet, and reeds) resides in the Bay Area where he leads his popular Septet and Orchestra Cartoon Jazz which has released two outstanding CD’s.

Jeff has toured Southeast Asia, Asia and Europe. He’s performed with Clark Terry, Regina Carter, Stan Getz, Tootie Heath, Frankie Lane, Steve Allen, the Ink Spots, the SF Symphony, Eddie Fisher, and Mike Lipskin. Jeff plays with Mal Sharpe's Big $ in Jazz Band, The Golden Gate Park Band, Noah Griffin, Carl Vast, Eric Shifrin, and Si Perkoff. Dave and Jeff played together in the Bay Area in the 70’s.

Ernesto Mazar Kindelán (upright bass) was born and raised in Cuba, and now makes the Bay Area his home.

He was educated at the prestigious University Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA)​ in Havana. He performed with the Grammy nominated salsa and timba group David Calzado y su Charanga Habanera. He just returned from a cross-country tour with Cubanismo.


Jim Frink is a versatile drummer from Davis CA. After graduating high school, he received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award and was accepted into the Monterey Jazz Festival's Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. He studied music at UC Santa Cruz and has performed internationally in five countries. His jazz trio, Triism, was awarded the Grand Prize in the 2016 Bucharest International Jazz Competition.
